Your golden years are around the corner, which means it’s probably time to stop partying—and to stop doing a few other things! We’re not kids anymore, which means you don’t need to worry about things like people-pleasing or comparing yourself to others. We get wiser with age, as they say, so now that you’re officially past the 50-year mark, here are 20 things to quit.
1. Trying to Please Everyone
Ideally, there comes a time in everyone’s life when they finally decide to stop caring; people’s silly opinions don’t matter, and they certainly don’t hold the same weight. That’s exactly where you need to be! Gone are the days of people-pleasing. Do yourself a favor, and embrace your own life.
2. Never Taking Risks
It’s normal to go through life without hopping out of planes or bungee jumping off of skyscrapers. And while some people think that risks are for youngsters, that’s not always true. Go ahead, take a helicopter ride with friends or get your first tattoo. There’s no shame in welcoming a touch of healthy danger.
3. Holding Grudges
Holding grudges is bad enough in your 30s. In your 50s, it’s just plain time-consuming. Grudges don’t do anything but weigh you down, and the older you get, the more you know that.
4. Judging Other People
It might have been fun to snicker behind your hand in high school, but older people know how rude it is. There’s no reason to outright judge someone for how they dress or what they look like—and doing so is pretty childish!
5. Ignoring Annual Check-Ups
No matter how old you get, annual check-ups are a must—and that’s something you should know by the time you’re 50! It’s one thing to put them as an invincible 20-year-old, but older people know the importance of booking a spot with their doc.
6. Never Learning Something New
Who says you’re “too old” to learn something new? Learning is one of life’s greatest gifts, regardless of your age. Pick up painting, grab some knitting needles, or finally learn how to speak another language.
7. Covering Up Tattoos
You’re 50 now, which means it’s time to end the so-called shame! That ink cost money, and heaven knows you look awesome, so display your art with pride. Unless it’s something painful, there’s no point in dumping even more time or resources into what you used to love.
8. Ignoring Your Mental Health
We’re veering towards a more welcoming world, especially when it comes to mental health, and yours is just as important as anyone else’s. Though the olden days didn’t have terminology or treatment, today’s therapists are more than happy to hear you out.
9. Hiding Your Age
A splash of water before bed, a little blush for a night out—no one’s saying you have to ditch skincare. But there’s a big difference between makeup and desperately trying to turn back the clock. Forget what others think, embrace your crow’s feet and grey hair!
10. Crash Dieting
Crash dieting is dangerous enough in your 20s, but it’s particularly harmful as you reach those golden years. Not only do you run a higher risk of rebounding, but crash diets can also increase stress and nutrient deficiencies.
11. Neglecting Sunscreen
Like it or not, sunscreen is part of a holy grail skincare routine, so don’t forego it, especially now! Wrinkles are the least of your worries without it—skipping sunscreen increases your risk of cancer and seriously damages your skin.
12. Staying in Bad Jobs
Leaving bad jobs is easier said than done, but now isn’t the time to settle. Don’t assume that you’re stuck in that cubicle just because you’re 50. If anything, now’s the perfect time to embrace the change you deserve.

13. Ditching Exercise
Though sedentary lifestyles harm everyone, they’re even worse in your 50s. Stay fit to prevent joint pain and alleviate chronic conditions. Exercise also helps you build muscle and supports heart health!
14. Eating Bad Food
Speaking of health, a proper diet is just as vital at this age. You may have been able to get away with pizza twice a week, but leave those days in the past. Stick with fresh fruits and veggies, and don’t forget about moderation.
15. Drinking Too Much
Of course, you have more than food to worry about as you age. Excessive drinking is also off the table. Not only is it terrible for you, but the last thing someone in their 50s needs is a hangover. One drink here and there is okay, but you need to know your limits.
16. Comparing Yourself to Others
The pressure to be “better than” is alive and well—though it’s mostly rampant on social media, older generations can still feel that pang of jealousy toward others. Try to shake off those feelings! You’re you, and that’s more than enough.
17. Ignoring Technology
We’re not advocating waiting in line for the latest iPhone. We are, however, saying that you need to embrace technology. Learn the ins and outs of your devices and brush up on popular platforms like Google Drive. You should also know how to upload photos and spot spam emails.
18. Keeping Up With Younger Generations
It’s one thing to send an email, but you don’t need to learn every new slang word. You also don’t need to keep up with their fashion trends. Trying to stay “cool” to younger generations never works out.
19. Neglecting Your Finances
In a perfect world, you already have an investment portfolio. In the real world, you might not be where you want to be, but that’s okay; there’s no time like the present to figure it out! Squirreling away a rainy day fund never hurt either. Even if you’re not set up for success right now, don’t turn a blind eye to finances. Retirement will be here sooner than you think.
20. Living in the Past
Mistakes and regrets love to haunt us, don’t they? Though it’s normal to feel blue now and then, don’t pitch a tent on Memory Lane. The older we get, the more we know how dangerous it is to dwell on the past.
