20 White Lies Every Woman Tells A Man

20 White Lies Every Woman Tells A Man

Sometimes Honesty Gets an Edit

Like it or not, little white lies tend to seep their way into relationships! It’s not like women are actively trying to hurt your feelings—in fact, it’s quite the opposite with some of these one-liners—but these half-hearted fibs are the ones ladies are most likely to use to cover their tracks. Come with us as we finally spill the beans on which 20 you’ll probably hear at least once.

1. “I Don’t Care Where We Eat”

Well, well, well, if it isn’t the line almost every man has heard before! She may technically be open to suggestions, but that doesn't mean every suggestion is acceptable. Mention the burger place you've visited twice this week, and you'll likely be shot down. Usually, “I don't care” means she's hoping you'll name somewhere she already had in mind.

2. “Go Ahead, I Don’t Mind”

Maybe you want another drink with your buddies or plan to spend Saturday afternoon playing golf. Whatever the case, she’ll probably tell you to go because she genuinely doesn't want to stop you, but the reality is that she wanted you to stay home.

3. “It Was On Sale”

We hate to break it to you, fellas, but a $160 jacket becomes a lot easier to show off when the conversation begins with a supposed bargain. She isn't necessarily hiding the purchase, but she may emphasize the 30 percent discount rather than the amount that actually left the bank account.

4. “I’ve Had This Forever”

While men don’t notice every accessory in the closet, they could’ve sworn that handbag wasn't in the pile last month. But apparently, it's an old family heirloom. This line tends to show up when something new is noticeable enough to attract questions.

5. “Your Hair Looks Good”

A questionable haircut can put any partner in an awkward position, and it’s no easier for men than it is for women. She'll compliment the new look while privately hoping it grows back, and there’s nothing wrong with the white lie.

6. “I Didn’t Notice Her”

When an attractive woman walks past, and you immediately wonder whether your partner noticed too, the answer’s obvious. Yes, she noticed. Saying she didn't just saves both of you from a conversation nobody needed.

7. “Your Friend is Nice”

There are men she'll happily spend time with, and then there's the buddy who tells the same college stories every time he has too many to drink. Even if she doesn’t particularly enjoy his company, calling him “nice” is the most diplomatic review. She knows he's important to you, so there's little benefit in explaining that three hours with him is a lot.

8. “I’m Almost Ready”

Most women have a famously flexible relationship with time, but there are a lot of reasons for that! Hair might still need fixing, one shoe could be missing, and three outfits may remain in the rotation of possibilities. In her defense, “almost” sounds much more encouraging than “give me another 25 minutes.”

9. “I Wasn’t Checking Your Phone”

We’re going to be honest: if your screen lights up with a message preview, she’s probably going to take a peek. She didn't go snooping, but it’s human nature to dart your eyes toward a bright light in your peripheral vision.

10. “I Don’t Remember Saying That”

Sometimes she genuinely forgets an old comment—and sometimes she remembers every word. Odds are that the second possibility is more likely when you're quoting something she said during an old argument. Admitting perfect recall would only reopen a case she considered closed.

11. “Your Mom Doesn’t Bother Me”

At this point, every man should know that wives can love their mother while finding certain habits exhausting. Maybe every visit includes questions about grandchildren, decorating advice, or an inspection of what's currently inside the fridge. They can all be a bit much, but rather than put you between two people you love, she keeps those complaints to herself.

12. “I Didn’t Buy That Much”

Shopping quantities become wonderfully subjective when several boxes arrive at once. We can’t help it—what men find to be “too much” differs from what we think is too much! The phrase isn't necessarily a lie so much as avoiding a financial hearing in the hallway.

13. “Of Course I Remember”

Oh, you thought men were bad with names and faces. Women suffer the same brain farts, too! Pretending you remember someone is a lot easier than asking “Who?” for the fourth time.

14. “I Like Your Shirt”

There are shirts women like, and there are shirts they tolerate. If you're proudly showing off an old tee from 2009, don’t expect too much enthusiasm beyond a kind word she didn’t exactly mean. Honestly, just be happy that she’s still giving it any attention!

15. “No, You Weren’t Snoring”

After watching you sleep, she may decide there's no point reporting your ruckus. Unless the noise genuinely kept her awake (or signals an obvious health concern), denying it saves you from something you can’t really control.

16. “I Barely Talked About You”

Her friends probably know more about your relationship than you think. That doesn't mean she's sharing secrets, but they definitely know about disagreements and what you bought her for your anniversary. Sorry to say, but “barely” can cover a surprisingly detailed group-chat discussion.

17. “That Doesn’t Bother Me Anymore”

A resolved tiff isn't always the same thing as a forgotten one. Okay, she may not care anymore about the birthday you forgot, but that doesn't mean the incident is completely buried. When a similar situation happens again, you'll quickly learn how securely that old information was filed away.

18. “I Was Just Curious”

Questions about an ex are bound to happen, so you might as well prepare for them now. Asking what she looked like, why you broke up, or whether you still follow her online usually comes with at least a little curiosity behind it. Calling the questions casual makes them easier to ask without sounding jealous.

19. “You Look Exactly the Same”

Pull out a photograph from 15 years ago, and very few adults look the same. Of course not! But she knows it too, and she’ll spot that your waistline, beard, or clothing may have evolved—for better or worse. It’s nicer to say you look the same, though.

20. “I Wasn’t Hinting”

Has she sent you a link to a necklace, stopped beside it in a store, and mentioned that her birthday is next month? No matter what she says, those were, in fact, hints. Don’t worry; if the necklace later appears, she'll still act surprised.
