Do You Have It Together?
Having your life together doesn’t mean you’ve reached some mythical stage where everything is color-coded, your inbox is empty, and nothing ever goes wrong. Most of the time, it simply means you’ve figured out how to handle the important parts of life without constantly feeling like one forgotten appointment could bring the whole operation crashing down. These people still make mistakes, lose their keys, and occasionally eat cereal for dinner, but they’ve built habits that keep things from spiraling when life gets messy.
1. Their Bills Are Paid Before Anyone Has to Remind Them
Adulting levels up when you can pay your bills without seeing that dreaded warning email. They don’t have to memorize every due date because they have reminders, autopayments, or whatever method they use to stay on track. Memorizing every bill due date won’t make you successful, but making sure you never miss one will.
2. They Usually Know What They’re Eating for Dinner
Life isn’t about having it all together if you spend Sunday cooking twelve different meals and labeling each container in the fridge. However, they typically have food in the house and some clue as to what they’ll eat each day of the week. When it’s time to make dinner, they aren’t staring into the abyss of their empty cabinets.
3. Their Home Has the Important Things in Stock
There’s nothing like opening up a cabinet to find toilet paper, bagged trash, soap, and all the other supplies you need before you run out. Someone who’s got it together knows when they’re low and restocks before it becomes an issue. Not worrying about being completely out of something is comforting.
4. They Actually Go to Their Appointments
Magically, they remember when they need to be at the dentist, doctor, hair salon, or wherever they scheduled an appointment a few months ago. They don’t have to have the fanciest calendar or system, but they do whatever helps them remember where they need to be. Bonus points if they allow enough time to get there instead of trying to cram everything in at the last second.
5. Their Car Isn’t Running on Hope Alone
If they own a car, they know when it needs its oil changed, tires rotated, or any other regular maintenance it may need. They don’t let every strange sound go ignored until their car decides to conk out on them one day. Staying on top of maintenance will save you money and headaches in the long run.
6. They Know Where Their Money Is Going
Being financially together doesn’t mean you have all the money in the world or a detailed spreadsheet with 52 budget categories. Someone who has their money together knows how much they make, where their money goes, and when they have bills due. Knowing where your money is going means you’re less likely to spend next week’s grocery money on whatever looked really fun at 2 a.m.
7. Their Laundry Gets Finished in One Cycle
For some people, doing laundry means washing clothes and then allowing them to live in the dryer for several days. Someone who appears to have life under control takes things one step further by actually folding or putting away the clean clothes. Their bedroom might not look like a department store display, but they can usually find what they need without digging through several piles.
8. They Respond to Important Messages
While you might not answer every Snapchat or text from your friends right away, important messages aren’t ignored. They realize that screaming into the void won’t make your work problem, due date, or payments go away. If they need time to take care of something, they’ll at least send a quick reply.
9. They Keep Their Calendar Updated
This can be a phone calendar, planner, or even the one on their wall. They’ve tried different things and figured out what system works for them. Birthdays, appointments, bill due dates, and life events have a home now instead of trying to remember each one. Does this mean they’ll never forget an important date? Of course not! But it’ll happen less often.
10. They Don’t Say Yes to Everything
Knowing how to say no is powerful. They know how much they can handle, both physically and mentally, so they can prioritize what needs their attention. If they don’t feel they can commit to something, they’ll say no. No means no.
11. Their Important Documents Are Easy to Find
Okay, they may not have a standing desk with built-in scanners and filing cabinets. But when they need their passport, tax documents, insurance cards, etc., they know where to find them. Stress is when you need something important and it could literally be in any one of seven drawers.
12. They Get Enough Sleep Most of the Time
Okay, they won’t always have time to go to bed when they want, and there will be late nights every now and again. Someone with their life together knows that consistently lacking sleep won’t make life easier. They understand the importance of sleep and make it a priority when they can.
13. They Have a Basic Plan for Emergencies
We’re not talking about a fallout shelter and fifty years’ worth of canned goods. Someone with their life figured out knows what they would do if they lost their wallet, needed to ask for help, or ran into a problem at home. Important contacts are saved in their phone, and important information is accessible.
14. They Keep Track of Their Commitments
If they said they would help you move, attend a party, or finish a project, there’s a good chance they’ll remember. They don’t rely on their perfect memory to remind them because they know memories can sometimes fail us. Writing things down or setting reminders helps them hold on to the commitments they make.
15. Their Space Can Be Messy Without Being Chaotic
Having your life together doesn’t require a spotless home where nobody is allowed to sit on the furniture. A few dishes, unfolded blankets, or clothes on a chair are normal signs that someone actually lives there. The difference is that the mess doesn’t reach a point where it becomes impossible to function or find anything important. They generally know when it’s time to clean up before the situation gets out of hand.
16. They Handle Problems Instead of Pretending They Don’t Exist
Just because your life is together doesn’t mean your whole home is sparkling clean all the time. Everyone leaves dishes in the sink once in a while, and messes happen. The difference is they know when it’s time to tidy up before it becomes overwhelming.
17. They Know How to Take Care of Themselves
Again, this will look different for everyone. But in general, they pay attention to their basic needs. Do they always eat healthy? Nope. But they don’t forget to eat either. They know when to sleep, take showers, move around, and take breaks.
18. They Leave Themselves Some Breathing Room
Life happens. Their whole day doesn’t need to be scheduled, and they try not to spend every dollar they make. They know that allowing yourself some leeway with time and money can really help when unexpected things come up.
19. They Aren’t Constantly Competing With Everyone Else
Sure, there will always be that guy with the bigger house or girl with the fancier job. Everyone you follow on social media probably had an amazing vacation. But people who have their life together aren’t spending their whole lives trying to compete with others.
20. They Know Their Life Still Isn’t Completely Together
Ironically, one of the biggest signs that you’ve got your life together is realizing that no one’s life is perfect. Yes, they still overlook things, run late, burn dinner, and have bad days too. But they don’t think that because they failed at one thing, their whole life is falling apart.
