The Worst Things To Wear To A Wedding & What To Wear Instead

Bring a Little Class to the Party

Wedding guests know all about the basics—no white dresses, no wearing hats indoors, etc. However, those cardinal rules are just the beginning. From all-black getups to loud colors, here’s everything to avoid (and what to wear instead).

1. Anything Outside Dress Code

Most weddings implement a dress code, providing the perfect inspiration for your outfit. Try not to stray too far from any suggestions—veering off the beaten path will likely leave you the odd man out.

2. White Dresses

This one should be a no-brainer, yet every season someone tempts fate and arrives in white. Though it’s practically impossible to upstage the bride, you’ll still draw plenty of negative attention clad in that lily white gown.

3. All Black Outfits

On the flip side—it’s a wedding, not a funeral! Black may go with everything but it shouldn’t be the star of your ensemble. Invest in black shoes, purses, or even a pashmina if you're itching to bring something dark.

4. Anything too Revealing

Not even a summer wedding warrants skimpy outfits, so keep that clubbing outfit on the rack. Check in with friends to see what they’re wearing or contact the bride if you’re iffy on your selection. (A good rule of thumb is that it's likely too revealing if you’re hesitant about it.)

5. Uncomfortable Shoes

Weddings require more walking than you think, which means proper shoes are in order. If you can’t walk in heels—ditch ‘em! Wedges and flats work great, too, and you won’t have to worry about any blisters.

6. Loud Outfits

It’s usually a stretch to police certain colors, but you still shouldn’t arrive in loud getups. You’ll stick out in anything too loud…and no occasion really calls for a neon yellow pantsuit.

7. Everyday Clothing

Even casual weddings require more formality than a denim coat. Leave your everyday wear at home. It might be someone else’s day but it’s still an excuse to dress up!

8. Colors That Match the Wedding Party

If you’re not in the wedding party, don’t dress like it. Matching their colors leads to all kinds of confusion (not to mention awkward situations). Couples usually inform their guests of color coordination, so you’ll have ample time to pick something different.

9. Hats Indoors

Like it or not, it’s considered rude to wear hats indoors. While it’s no problem to show up in one, take it off during any indoor activities.

10. Joke Outfits

Some guests find it funny to show up in a tuxedo t-shirt, but we can assure you it’s not. Weddings are momentous occasions that deserve proper respect, so just rent a monkey suit for the day—you’ll live!

Now that we've covered some basic don'ts, it's time to say, "I do" to popular apparel choices.

1. Seasonal Attire

Wedding or not, dress for the weather! Guests usually have a year’s notice, leaving plenty of time to work out an outfit. Whether you’re basking in the sun or bundled in the cool breeze, plan accordingly to stay comfortable the whole evening.

2. Modest Statement Pieces

Sure, it’s gauche to arrive in gaudy pieces but no one objects to a modest flair. Statement jewelry or even colorful pocket squares provide that pop of color without blinding other guests.

3. Flats

Heels usually get all the credit, but flats are just as cute! Not only that, but they’re way better for feet after a night of dancing and mingling. You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on a cute pair either, simply pack a collapsable pair in your purse.

4. Colorful Accessories

Earrings, bangles, or statement necklaces tie an entire outfit together. Don’t be shy about accessorizing modest outfits—anything from belts and socks to cufflinks and ties display your personality.

5. Subtle Sequins

You don’t want to dress like a disco ball, but subtle shimmer lights up the room. Whether you plan to accessorize or invest in a modest fabric, that added touch of glimmer is always welcome.

6. Pashmina Wraps

With so many colors and fabrics, it’s a crime to forego pashminas! They’re perfect accessories to keep you warm or simply cover bare shoulders. Best of all, you can style them in a dozen different ways.

7. Comfortable Dress Shoes

Okay, flats might not be your thing, but appropriate dress shoes are a must at any wedding. Keep it classy (and comfortable) with classic options like nude pumps or oxfords.

8. Tailored Suits

It doesn’t matter who you are—tailored suits look good on anyone. Though we like traditional colors like grey or black, we’re also suckers for bolder variations. For example, burgundy or a solid navy blue works wonders, too.

9. Long Dresses

On the other hand, wedding season beckons flowing gowns! Nothing sings femininity like a long dress, so don’t be shy about indulging. You have dozens of choices available, including color, fabric, and prints. Now’s the time to get creative!

10. Clutch Purses

We’re always anxious about losing a clutch, but they’re still a must-have. Snakeskin, gold clasps, and dainty chain straps make these little purses a timeless accessory.
