The Less Charming Side of Being Human
While there are plenty of amazing and feel-good human emotions that we constantly strive to feel, we can't ignore the flip side. Not every part of being human is charming, and there are certainly a handful of emotions that make us feel our worst. These are the feelings that make you act a little worse, think a little smaller, or replay conversations you should’ve left alone hours ago. Here are 20 of the ugliest human emotions no one enjoys feeling.
1. Resentment
A feeling that really eats you up inside, resentment is what happens when anger decides to stay longer than it should. No matter how much you tell yourself you're over something, one small reminder is enough to bring back all that negative energy.
2. Envy
Envy doesn't just make you pay close attention to what someone else has; it makes you take their success personally in the most negative way. You start building an internal case as to why they don't deserve it as much as you do, which is an uncomfortable feeling when you turn someone else's good news into your inconvenience.
3. Shame
There's nothing light or pleasant about feeling ashamed, in fact, it's often one of the most deeply personal and unnecessarily cruel emotions to go through. Shame goes beyond just knowing you made a mistake, it makes you want to disappear, avoid people, or rewrite history even though you know it's not possible.
4. Jealousy
Jealousy turns any perfectly reasonable person into a full-time investigator who doesn't know how to respect boundaries. It causes you to start reading meaning into pauses, messages, glances, or details that are harmless, and it’s ugly because it makes trust feel fragile and turns your own imagination into your worst enemy.
5. Bitterness
Bitterness is a weird emotion that leaves you feeling in a constant bad mood where old disappointments turn into your permanent attitude. Instead of saying, “That hurt,” it says, “This is how life is.” It's a feeling that can seem protective at first, but over time, it drains warmth from every moment.

6. Humiliation
Humiliation is simply embarrassment with a harsher edge. It doesn’t just make you wish something hadn’t happened, it makes you wonder whether everyone sees you in a different light now. Even when other people forget the moment, your mind will keep playing it on repeat.
7. Contempt
One of the ugliest emotions you can feel, contempt makes you look down on someone while feeling unremorseful. You stop seeing that person as well, a person, and start seeing them as only the traits that annoy or offend you. It's a feeling that's certainly hard to shake.
8. Guilt
A little bit of guilt can be useful when it helps you fix a mistake you've made, but it can turn into an ugly feeling if it builds too strongly. It leaves you constantly reviewing your choices, picturing better versions of yourself, and endlessly wishing you were smarter, calmer, or just overall better. At its worst, guilt does anything but guide you.
9. Spite
Feeling spite definitely makes you show your ugly side. It can make you want to hurt someone just because you feel hurt yourself. Sometimes, it can dress itself up as justice, but if you’re honest, it’s often more about satisfaction than fairness.
10. Insecurity
In a world where confidence is what opens all of your doors, feeling insecure makes you question yourself even when you've done nothing wrong. It's the kind of feeling that makes you doubt every little thing, and can feel especially tiring because it asks you to keep proving your worth to yourself over and over again.
11. Regret
Regret is the painful awareness that you can understand something better now than you did when it mattered. It causes you to revisit old decisions with all the wisdom you didn’t have at the time, which is convenient but not especially fair. It can become especially dangerous if it keeps you stuck in the past.
12. Disgust
Disgust can be shades of different feelings, whether it be physical, emotional, or moral, but none of its versions are especially pleasant. When you feel it toward another person, it can make you unreasonably mean, and when you feel it toward yourself, it can become especially harsh and hard to shake.
13. Loneliness
What's more painful than feeling completely alone? Even when you're surrounded by a bunch of people, it can feel like no one truly knows who you are. It’s an ugly feeling not because it makes you weak, but because it can make you feel especially trapped and lost.
14. Desperation
When you feel like you're out of options, that's when desperation hits you, fast and hard. It can make you say too much, accept too little, or chase answers that don’t actually respect you. The emotion is uncomfortable because it pushes you toward urgency before you've really had a chance to think things through.
15. Suspicion
Sure, suspicion can make you feel alert, but it also makes peace nearly impossible. It makes you start collecting small details and treating them like proof, even when there's nothing to them. It’s ugly because it can wear down relationships before anyone has actually done anything wrong.
16. Self-Pity
When life is being especially unfair, self-pity can be understandable in small doses, but it becomes a problem when it turns into your favorite explanation and excuse for everything. It’s not pleasant to feel because it can make comfort seem more appealing than growth.
17. Panic
Panic is fear with the volume turned up and the reasoning turned down. It’s a deeply unpleasant emotion because it makes calm feel unavailable right when you need it most. It turns every situation into a do-or-die type of feeling!
18. Dread
That feeling of heavy anticipation of something you don't want to face or deal with can put a lot of weight on anyone's shoulder. It's what makes an upcoming conversation, decision, or event feel like impending doom. What makes dread so ugly is that it charges you emotionally before anything has even happened.
19. Powerlessness
That feeling of thinking your choices don't matter enough to make any impact can make you turn quiet, withdrawn, or unusually angry. This emotion is especially difficult because when you're already feeling down on hope, it's hard to pick yourself back up again.
20. Hatred
Hatred is intense, consuming, and can make you reduce a person, group, or situation into something it's not, which leaves very little room for judgment or humanity. You never want to feel it for long, because hatred asks for a lot of space and rarely gives you anything good in return.
