They Let Kids Play With These?!
Most of us remember childhood toys as harmless little pieces of nostalgia, whether they were tucked into a toy box, spread across the living room, or permanently taking up space on the bedroom floor. What many people don't remember is that some of those familiar toys were later recalled because of design problems, loose parts, questionable materials, or other safety concerns. In some cases, the recalls were so specific that only certain versions were affected, which meant plenty of families never realized one of their old favorites had appeared on a recall list.
1. Polly Pocket Magnetic Play Sets
Remember those colorful Polly Pocket play sets that came with dolls and accessories that stuck to the play set using magnets? Several versions were recalled because small magnets used in the toys could become loose, posing a swallowing hazard. The recall eventually grew to cover about 7.3 million play sets.
2. Aqua Dots
Aqua Dots may not look like anything unsafe at first glance. The concept was to snap the beads together, spray them with water, and create designs that would harden. After roughly 4.2 million units were recalled in 2007, parents learned there were serious risks if children swallowed the beads.

3. Magnetix Building Sets
As fun as Magnetix building sets could be, they had a flaw. The steel balls and magnetic rods could separate, sending tiny magnets flying around. Roughly four million sets were recalled by parents around 2007.
4. Cabbage Patch Kids Snacktime Dolls
The Snacktime Kids dolls took the idea of a hungry doll very seriously because their mouths mechanically pulled in toy food. Unfortunately, there were reports of hair and fingers getting caught in the mechanism, which led Mattel and the CPSC to announce a refund program in 1997. Approximately 500,000 dolls were affected!

5. Easy-Bake Ovens
Easy-Bake Ovens were great until one design of the toy was recalled due to fingers getting pinched in the front-loading oven door. This led to a major recall and a redesigned replacement product. About one million units were involved in the 2007 recall, which probably made more than a few childhood baking sessions look very different in hindsight.
6. Barbie and Tanner Play Sets
Barbie and Tanner were plastic pets that taught children about owning dogs. Children played with them and their accessory skeletons until parents found out some versions of the toys had magnets that could become loose. Barbie and Tanner joined the list of recalled magnetic toys when about one million toys were recalled in 2007.
7. Doggie Day Care Play Sets
The Doggie Day Care play sets joined the parade of Mattel magnet recalls. Small magnets used to attach certain toys and accessories to each other could become loose, causing problems. About one million toys were recalled.
8. Batman Die-Cast Vehicles
Not every recalled childhood toy was a doll or craft kit, and some Batman products found themselves on the recall list as well. Certain Batman toys were among products recalled in 2007 because of concerns about lead levels in surface paint. That means a toy meant to bring Gotham City into your living room may have been pulled from shelves without you ever realizing it.
9. Fisher-Price Dora the Explorer Toys
Remember how much Dora the Explorer merchandise there was in the early 2000s? Unfortunately, some of those Fisher-Price toys became included in a massive recall. In 2007, about 4 million licensed character toys were recalled because surface paint could have high levels of lead.
10. Sesame Street Toys
Another set of toys recalled by Fisher-Price were Sesame Street toys. The issue involved paint that could contain excessive levels of lead, and approximately 967,000 toys were affected across several character lines. If you had a favorite Elmo or Cookie Monster toy from that period, it may have been worth a closer look at the time.
11. Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway Toys
Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends were probably riding on your living room floor for months on end. Certain products were recalled due to high levels of lead in paint. Since there were so many Thomas & Friends pieces, toys weren't automatically recalled simply because you owned them all.

12. Laugh & Learn Learning Bunny
The Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Learning Bunny looked like the kind of cheerful educational toy parents could leave in the playroom without a second thought. However, a 2007 recall affected about 1.2 million units because a component could create a choking concern. It’s a reminder that even a toy designed around songs, colors, and learning wasn't immune to ending up on a recall list.
13. Laugh & Learn Musical Learning Chair
The Laugh & Learn Musical Learning Chair was another Fisher-Price product that received a recall notice. Some versions were recalled in 2006, although the specific affected models were limited to certain product numbers. Families who owned one of those cheerful little chairs may have remembered it as a harmless source of music and buttons without realizing it had later appeared on a safety alert.
14. Power Wheels Lightning PAC
The Power Wheels Lightning PAC gave kids the chance to feel like they were driving something much more exciting than a regular ride-on toy. In 2005, certain models were recalled because of problems involving the tires. 15. Power Wheels MX3 Mini Bike
This example proves multiple Power Wheels toys can show up on recall lists. The MX3 Mini Bike faced recalls, as did the Lightning PAC mentioned above. Remember zooming around on these? Now learn they were recalled not once, but twice.
16. Grow-to-Pro Pogo Stick
Kids needed to be careful with this one before it was recalled. The Grow-to-Pro Pogo Stick was recalled by Mattel in 2005 due to an issue with the metal rods. You might not have noticed the recall if the pogo stick remained buried in the garage or passed along to another family after it stopped being the favorite outdoor activity of the summer.
17. Little People Animal Sounds Farm
Kids spent hours pressing buttons on this Little People toy, but some versions were recalled. Certain versions were recalled in 2003, meaning even this familiar farm play set had a place in Mattel's recall history. The specific affected models mattered, so not every version of the toy was automatically included in the safety action.
