5 Must-Have Essentials to Pack in Your Hospital Bag Before Giving Birth

As the much anticipated due date inches even closer, there’s definitely an increase in both excitement and anxiety. While there’s joy in finally getting to meet the newest member of your family, the stress and anxiety surrounding the unknowns of labour and delivery can become overwhelming. To help ease this difficult process, preparation is key. An essential part of this preparation is packing a well-stocked hospital bag. This valuable item can make your hospital stay feel much more comfortable and relaxing. But if you’re confused about what you need to pack, here are five must-have essentials that you absolutely need to include.

1. Personal Items and Comfort Clothes

After going through the long and arduous process of giving birth, you will undoubtedly want to feel as comfortable as possible. It’s highly recommended that you pack several loose, breathable outfits for both during labour and after the birth. Consider lightweight fabrics that are soft on the skin, and for your own convenience, choose some front-opening tops that will make it easier for breastfeeding (if you choose to do so). Don’t forget to throw in multiple undergarments including nursing bras and underwear! For an extra cozy feel, try bringing some comfy socks, slippers, and a robe. You deserve to feel as comfortable as possible!

2. Hygiene and Personal Care Products

While hospitals do provide some basic hygiene essentials, there’s nothing more soothing than having your own trusted products that make you feel more at home. Keep a bunch of travel-sized goodies such as toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, facial cleanser, body wash, shampoo, and conditioner that are ready to go at a moment’s notice. If you wear contact lenses, don’t forget to bring your glasses and contact solution too!

It’s also a good idea to pack some maternity pads and nursing pads as you’ll likely need them after giving birth. For an added bonus, bring some nipple cream if you’re planning to breastfeed.

3. Nutrition and Hydration

While the hospital will provide you with your main meals, it’s always a good idea to pack some extra snacks. If you ever find yourself hungry during odd hours or are craving a particular snack, you’ll definitely be glad you had these ready to go. Some good recommendations include nutritious items like granola bars, dried fruit, or nuts. It’s also important to keep hydrated, especially if you’re planning to breastfeed. Packing a large, reusable water bottle can not only help you keep track of your water intake, but it’ll also make sure you stay well-hydrated.

4. Essential Documentation

This item is more for the administrative side of things. Make sure you bring along all the necessary identification and documentation you’ll need at the hospital. This might include your driver’s license or an ID card, insurance information, and any hospital paperwork you might need. It’s also highly recommended that you have your birth plan (if you have one!) and a list of emergency contact numbers readily available. Having a well-prepared folder of documentation can help ease your way through any administrative procedures and also keep your stress levels down.

5. Entertainment and Comfort Items

Going into labour can sometimes be a long, tiring process. When your stress levels are high, having your favourite entertainment options available can help you pass the time and ease your mind. Pack items like books, magazines, a tablet, or your smartphone with chargers ready to go. To make the hospital environment feel more comfortable and familiar, don’t be afraid to bring along your favourite pillow or blanket.

Another great way to calm the nerves is by listening to music. If you enjoy humming to some songs or following along to guided meditations, create a playlist beforehand and bring headphones or a portable speaker. Remember, the most important thing here is creating a safe and comfortable environment where you feel as relaxed as possible during your hospital stay.
