Repurposing vintage items for modern use has become a crafty niche of the DIY communities, and a bar cart is no exception.

Used originally as a small serving area for home entertainment, a bar cart often housed liquor, mixers, ice, and all your other tools and accouterments needed to make an absolutely delightful cocktail. These carts became quite popular after prohibition and were often found in the homes of the upper and upper-middle classes.

You can still use a bar cart for its original purpose today, but it’s not a requirement for owning one. Here are a few things you can do with this functionally stylish piece of history.

Swap It Out

Before the 1930s, bar carts were used among the Victorian elite to serve coffee and tea, and now you can also be part of this sophisticated group.

Pop your coffee maker, kettle, mugs, and hot drink staples onto this mini table and boom: you’ve now got a gorgeous coffee corner. This can be an excellent addition to any home office, sitting room, or even as a dedicated corner in your kitchen.

If drinks aren’t your thing, you can also use it as a standard serving table when you have guests over. Flatware, cutlery, and snacks will all have a dedicated space.

Movie Madness

If you’re a movie lover, what better way to showcase your love of film than with a dedicated movie cart? You could put your Letterboxd Top 4 films on display, add a mini popcorn maker, or make it the dedicated spot for your projector or surround sound system.

Alternatively, music lovers can use a bar cart to show off and organize their records. If the cart is big (and stable) enough, you could probably even fit a record player on it.

Certain kitchen items can get lost or forgotten about, but a handy-dandy bar cart could change that. A multi-shelf bar cart could still hold your wine bottles, but can also hold cookbooks, specific cutlery, spices, or small appliances.

If you don’t live somewhere with a pantry or have very limited cabinetry, a bar cart is also an easy way to keep dry goods easily accessible.

Whatever you need it for, a bar cart may be just the thing to help you have a much more organized kitchen.

Plant Stand

We can’t be the first to have thought of this genius idea. Keep your plants off the ground but still in the sun with the help of a bar cart.

Again, a multi-shelf bar cart could be beneficial here, aside from the plants. Smaller mid-level shelves can hold seeds, tools, or even fertilizer, making it a one-stop gardening shop to keep your green friends in the best shape possible.

Mini Library

While you could use a bar cart as a side table, that’s not necessarily what we’re talking about here.

A mini portable library that you can take through the house may be the thing that’s missing from your life, don’t you think? Just imagine it: A battery-operated lamp, all your bookmarks in one place, and your upcoming reads sitting and waiting for you in one convenient spot.
