You’re not the same person you were at 21. We know that, you know that, the world knows that. But has your change in taste been reflected in your closet?

As you grow, change, and possibly enter into a more professional work environment, you start to learn what feels good on your body, but that doesn’t mean you have to throw out your beloved pieces from your college days. We’re here to show you how you can keep some of your favorite clothes but make them better reflect where you’re at in life.

Tops

Your favorite patterned halter might bring back fuzzy memories of spring break, but it doesn’t have to stay that way! Sure, some of these “going out tops” might not be work-appropriate, but you can still make use of them in other ways. Try your favorite halter, cropped shirt, or strappy top with some high-waisted linen pants for an elevated dinner or bar look, paired with a nice heel, loafer, or flat. Even your basics can be elevated by popping on a blazer.

Sweaters

If you’re lucky enough to work somewhere with a more casual dress option, you can make your crewnecks or hoodies seem incredibly chic. Keep your jeans close, but pair with a leather or khaki trench for a sweet city-girl vibe, and opt for a high-heeled boot. Crewnecks can also be elevated by wearing a turtleneck or collared shirt underneath.

Pants

Pants can be a bit of a tough one to elevate, since the back of your closet probably holds jeans, leggings, or baggy sweats. Jeans are pretty self-explanatory: pair with a nice top and a belt, and you’re ready to go. It can be a little harder to dress up in leggings, but you can pair your baggy sweatpants with a tight top and a statement jacket for a comfortably chic errands fit.

Skirts

Sadly, a mini skirt won’t do well around the office, so you should keep those for your weekends. However, a midi or maxi skirt can easily be elevated into something more “grown-up.” Pair your skirts with a cute shirt and vest combo, cardigan, or simple sweater, and elevate with some nice jewelry. If you feel like going really grown-up, now would also be the time to invest in pantyhose.

Dresses

The “little black dress” isn’t just for going out anymore. You can take a simple spaghetti-strap dress to the office if you know how to layer. If the dress is on the shorter side, opt for some tights for professionalism, and layer with a shrug, cardigan, blazer, or even a button-up. Chelsea boots, knee-highs, Mary Janes, or loafers are also good shoe options.

Other Tips:

  • “Professional” or “elevated” doesn’t mean you have to lack personal style! Choose fabrics, colors, patterns, and cuts that feel right for your body.
  • This would be the opportune time to start investing in some good jewelry, if and when you can.
  • The same goes for clothing. Opt for quality over quantity—thrift stores often sell 100% cotton, wool, or other breathable, soft fabrics for lower prices.
  • Don’t forget about accessories! High-quality belts, hats, gloves, scarves, sunglasses, and the like can all play a part in tying an outfit together.
