IKEA has become the ideal place to shop for home storage, due to its easy-to-read instructions, cheap and lightweight furniture, and its stackable packaging for simple transportation.
The Swedish monolith has become a staple in many millennial homes, often providing ample storage opportunities for folks who may rent somewhere without a linen closet.
While most IKEA storage is good, but nothing to write home about, there are a few that stand above the rest… and a few that we’d recommend you avoid.
BEST: BESTÅ Storage System
The BESTÅ storage units are relatively cheap TV benches that come in a variety of finishes. They can work as a stand for your TV, or are just as effective as under TV storage, coming in different heights with open or closed storage options.
WORST: PAX Wardrobe System
These popular wardrobe systems are an easy, customizable way to completely revamp your closet, and no one is denying them that. However, customers who have purchased this system often note how tedious the building process is, and how the clunky, standard shape of the system doesn’t account for awkwardly shaped closets, baseboards, outlets, or windows.
BEST: SKUBB Storage Boxes
These classic fabric boxes are masters of multi-purpose use, as they can be used both as in-drawer organizers and as a storage solution for seasonal items. They come in a variety of sizes, with some also having a zipper closure to keep dirt and dust off your clothing.
WORST: EKET Storage Units
The EKET cubes are also a customizable storage solution that can fit just about any home. They’re also quite a popular purchase, but often come with structural inconsistencies that make the furniture look shoddy. Customers have also noted issues with door alignment on certain units, and a general flimsiness of the product that isn’t found among some of their other storage families.
BEST: KALLAX Shelving Unit
Another customizable family unit, these square cubes can come as standalone pieces, as shelving units, and can even be used for wall-based storage. These cubbies are often noticed for more depth, a sturdier build, and their compatibility with shelving inserts.
WORST: ÄNGESBYN Storage Table
This rustic coffee table comes in two sizes and features a wooden top with a metal base. The storage element of this table comes from the fabric bin attached to the metal legs.
While it should be an effective home storage method, many folks have said that this storage solution lacks a few things. For one, the fabric bag is quite fragile, and many customers have noticed that it falls apart quite easily. Folks have also noticed that the actual table size is not that large, making it lackluster in both of its uses.
Ultimately, you will figure out what works best for you, your space, and your budget. These are merely guidelines that we hope will help you along your IKEA journey. Best of luck, and happy building!
