Sometimes, the Comments Tell You Everything
We all have an idea of what misogyny looks like, but the reality is that the most upsetting examples don’t always show up as an angry outburst—sometimes it's an ordinary comment that a man isn’t even embarrassed to say. Whether you're dating, working, or just stuck beside him on the bus, these 20 comments can tell you quite a lot about how that supposed nice guy actually views women.
1. Jokes About Women in the Kitchen
A man who keeps joking that women should "make him a sandwich" isn't exactly breaking new comedic ground. Not only that, he’s immediately outing his archaic views. If he gets irritated when women don't laugh along, that only makes the comment harder to ignore.
2. Saying Women Are Too Emotional
Watch what happens when a woman gets frustrated. Suddenly, she’s "too emotional.” Sure enough, the same man may watch a male boss slam a door, raise his voice, or complain through an entire meeting without questioning his skills. Judging ordinary emotions differently displays a pretty clear double standard.
3. Claiming Women Aren't Funny
We may have already covered stale so-called jokes, but this one needs to be retired, too. Announcing that women simply aren't funny tells you more about the speaker than anyone else. Nobody needs to enjoy every comedian, but turning personal taste into a verdict on women is where things go sideways.
4. Insisting That Men Are Smarter
Some men will confidently explain that men invented more things, won more awards, or became more famous scientists…all because they're supposedly more intelligent. Funnily enough, that argument conveniently skips over centuries in which women were denied opportunities, rights, and recognition for their work.
5. Calling Every Confident Woman "Bossy"
A woman gives clear instructions, knows what she wants, and suddenly she's controlling. Meanwhile, a man who acts the same way is likely praised for knowing how to take charge. Talk about a tired double standard—one it’s time to unpack!
6. Saying Women Dress for Male Attention
A woman wears a short skirt, bright lipstick, or a fitted dress, and some guy inevitably decides she wants men drooling over her. Wrong! Women actually dress for all kinds of reasons, like confidence in their style, so treating every choice as an invitation unnecessarily centers decisions around men.
7. Complaining That Feminism Has "Gone Too Far"
There's plenty of room for thoughtful conversations about ideas, but "feminism has gone too far" isn’t one of them. How exactly has it gone too far? Women earning more money? Refusing unwanted advances or delaying marriage? Equality is all about fairness!
8. Saying Women Should Choose Nicer Men
When a woman describes being cheated on or treated badly, telling her she simply should've chosen a “nicer” man is a wild way to be supportive. People don't announce every harmful quality during the first date, and plenty of unhealthy behavior develops gradually. Holding women responsible for predicting men's actions gives the person actually behaving badly a convenient escape route.
9. Assuming Successful Women Slept Their Way Up
Few comments expose someone's misogyny faster than saying a successful woman must've used her body to advance. People rarely make the same assumption when a man hits the top of the ladder—apparently, believing that a woman worked hard is simply too boring for some guys out there.

10. Saying Mothers Shouldn't Work So Much
Working mothers always hear that they're missing their children's childhoods, putting their careers first, or letting somebody else raise their kids. Strangely, fathers working the same hours are far less likely to receive hardheaded speeches. Mothers are doing their best, and they deserve credit!

11. Mocking Men for Doing "Women's Work"
Pay attention when a guy laughs at another man for cooking dinner. Does he snicker when a husband takes parental leave, does laundry, or is the primary caregiver? Beneath the teasing is the outdated belief that domestic chores are feminine.
12. Saying Women Hit "the Wall"
Anyone deadset on saying women "hit the wall" at 30 needs some inner reflection. The phrase reduces women's value to youth and physical attractiveness, and sure enough, it doesn’t apply an unforgiving expiration date to men. People age, faces change, and turning that perfectly normal process into a warning specifically for women is very telling.
13. Assuming a Woman is on Her Period
Maybe she's irritated because someone interrupted her six times. Maybe she’s peeved that she got ignored or someone said something rude. Asking whether she's on her period is a handy way to avoid considering what was already terrible behavior aimed at her.
14. Saying Women Secretly Want to Be Chased
Only the worst guys hear that a woman isn’t interested and chase her anyway. It’s not a coy cat-and-mouse game, and no is a full sentence. Respecting someone's answer isn't difficult when you believe she knows her own mind.
15. Treating Friends as Romantic Options
Some men insist there's no point in being friends with a woman unless there's at least a possibility of dating her. Insane—and incorrect! Think of all the friendships you’re missing out on. If romance is the only thing that makes women interesting, he's telling you exactly how he really feels.
16. Claiming Women Are "Naturally" Better at Housework
Nobody is born knowing the correct setting for a washing machine. Saying women are naturally better at domestic chores is almost always just a convenient explanation for why she should perform more of them. It’s also an easy gateway for weaponized incompetence.
17. Calling Women Gold Diggers
A woman says financial stability matters to her, and suddenly she's accused of chasing credit cards. There’s literally no shame in a woman wanting someone who can maintain employment or contribute to shared expenses. Women aren’t morally suspicious for having standards.
18. Saying Women Are Less Valuable After Intimacy
Some men proudly divide women into those they'd sleep with and those they'd consider suitable for a serious relationship, and it’s really not the compliment they think it is. The contradiction is especially obvious when a man celebrates his own history while treating a woman's time in the boudoir as “poor character.”

19. Insisting Women Create Workplace Drama
It’s always funny to see two female coworkers disagreeing, only for someone to swoop in babbling how women make drama. Two male coworkers arguing, though? That’s apparently fine. Turning individual behavior into a gender-wide flaw is flat-out lazy thinking.
20. Respecting Women…But Only Certain Ones
Sometimes the warning comes immediately after the reassurance: he respects women, just not women who dress a certain way, sleep with too many people, don't want children, earn more than their husbands—the list goes on. Respect that disappears isn't really respect.
