Small Details Can Change the Whole Look
A home doesn't need expensive furniture or designer decorations to look polished and inviting. In fact, some of the biggest problems have less to do with how much you spend and more to do with clutter, mismatched details, poor maintenance, and choices that make a room feel unfinished. Fortunately, most of these issues are relatively easy to fix, especially when you start paying attention to the small details that affect how a space comes together.
1. Too Much Clutter
Sometimes when you decorate your home with nice furniture and items, they can get overlooked. If you have all of your counters and shelving cluttered with items, your home can appear cluttered. You don't have to have fewer items in your home, but try to store some away.
2. Fake Plants That Look Obviously Fake
If you don't want to tend to real plants, then having artificial ones can be nice. Just make sure to find some that are more lifelike. Covered in dust and too brightly colored are some giveaways.
3. Visible Cords Everywhere
Whether it's cords from your TV or electronics, they can all add to your room's cluttered appearance. Try to conceal some of your cords; they don't all have to be hidden behind your walls. Clips, sleeves, cable boxes, and furniture placement can keep the worst offenders out of sight.

4. Too Many Matching Furniture Sets
When buying all of your furniture for a bedroom or living room, it can be convenient. But it can make the room look boring if everything matches. Your furniture doesn't need to look like it was purchased from the same page of a catalog.
5. Cheap-Looking Lighting Fixtures
Another thing that can make your home look cheap is bad lighting. Having dim lights or fixtures that don't go with the rest of your decor can make your nice furniture look dull. Replacing an old fixture or using warmer, appropriately placed lighting can give the room a more finished appearance.
6. Bare Walls Everywhere
Just because you want to have minimalist decor doesn't mean you should have no pictures on your walls. Having no pictures can make your room look bland and not complete. A few appropriately sized pieces of artwork, photographs, mirrors, or other decorations can give the space some personality.
7. Tiny Rugs in Large Rooms
Sometimes your furniture can look unbalanced if your rug is too small. Your rug should at least touch your couch and coffee table. Before buying one, measure the room and consider how the furniture will actually sit around it.
8. Too Many Decorative Signs
Having too many quotes or decorative signs can make your home look tacky. Instead of decorating all of your walls with these, just have one or two that you truly love. If you wouldn't genuinely want the item without the wall being empty, it might be worth reconsidering.
9. Dusty Decorations
Just like clutter, having dust on your items can make your home look cheap. Clean your dark-colored furniture and fake plants so they don't show dirt as easily. A quick cleaning routine can make inexpensive furnishings look considerably better.
10. Furniture That's Too Big for the Room
Large furniture can overwhelm a small space and leave very little room to move around. Make sure to pick out furniture that will fit your space. Having plenty of walking space around your furniture is important.
11. Furniture That's Too Small for the Room
Having furniture that's too large for your room is one issue, but so is furniture that's too small. Your sofa or tables shouldn't look dwarfed by the room. Pick items that will complement your room's size.
12. Plastic Covers Left on Furniture
Maybe you have your new furniture still wrapped in plastic from when you bought it. The furniture was purchased to be used, after all. If you're worried about spills or wear, washable covers or regular maintenance usually look much better than permanent plastic.
13. Overfilled Open Shelving
Open shelves can be cute, but if you overdo it, they can look messy. Books, dishes, decorations, and miscellaneous belongings can quickly start competing for attention. Leaving some breathing room between items makes the shelving look more deliberate.
14. Mismatched Window Treatments
You don't have to have the exact same curtain and blind combo in every room of your home. However, your home should look cohesive and have similar styles of curtains. Paying attention to length, placement, and overall proportions goes a long way.
15. Worn-Out Hardware
You wouldn't think that old, dirty cabinet knobs could make your kitchen look dated. But trust me, they can. Spend some money and replace your cabinet hardware, and your kitchen or bathroom will look amazing.
16. Too Many Different Colors
Try not to have too many colors in one room. It can make your room look all jumbled together. Don't worry about sticking with one color; you just have to have some similar colors in your room.
17. Fake-Looking Finishes
There's some nice, affordable products out there that can make your home look great. But sometimes some just look too artificial and unrealistic. Fake wood grain or anything with metal that looks too thin can make your room look tacky.
18. Neglected Walls and Trim
If you have dirty baseboards or walls with holes in them, it can really affect how your room looks. Make sure your baseboards are clean and your walls have been painted. A little touch-up paint and a thorough cleaning can make a surprisingly large difference to the overall appearance.
19. Too Many Small Decorations
A room filled with dozens of tiny objects can become visually overwhelming. Collections of miniature decorations, candles, figurines, and miscellaneous accessories often look better when they're grouped thoughtfully rather than scattered everywhere. Giving your favorite pieces more space can actually make them stand out more.
20. Ignoring Basic Maintenance
A home can have beautiful furniture and tasteful decorations while still looking cheap if basic repairs are being ignored. Loose cabinet doors, burned-out bulbs, peeling caulk, squeaky hinges, and damaged flooring all contribute to the impression that a space isn't being cared for. Keeping up with these small jobs often does more for a home's appearance than buying another decorative item.
