It's Not a Phase
There’s nothing harder than shopping for a teenager—with so many products, you’d think you’d have a strong chance of getting it right. But instead, there appear to be dozens of rules determining what’s cool and what’s not. Luckily for you, this is the only gift guide you’ll need!
1. Stationery
It makes perfect sense at first—if they go to school, they’ll need school supplies—but there’s nothing more boring than a new eraser or a protractor kit. Gifts aren’t about fulfilling needs—they’re about fulfilling wants. So, before you buy the set of glitter pens, ask yourself if this will truly make your teen happy.
2. Board Games
Board games are great fun for the whole family but are not a good gift for a teenager. If you want to incorporate board games into family time, you should buy them for the family. Don’t waste a group gift on a single person—instead, make sure your teen's gift is exclusively for them.

3. Slippers
Cozy slippers come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and you may think those giant shark slippers are equally hilarious and comfortable. However, your teen has been counting the days until they get presents—and a pair of slippers just isn’t enough.

4. Generic Clothing
When it comes to fashion, teens are very fickle. The last thing they want is mom or dad influencing what they wear. So, no matter how sensible or warm that sweater looks—you’re better off ditching it in the store.

5. Perfume/Body Spray
Everyone wants to smell nice, so buying a scent may seem reasonable. However, a person’s scent preference is very personal. This is something your teen should buy for themselves—best to keep your nose out of it.

6. Chocolate
Chocolate is a universal gift—everyone loves chocolate. It works for housewarmings, Valentine's, and Easter. But believe us—your teen is expecting much more. That being said, chocolates are a great companion to a grander gift.

7. Plain Jewelry
Jewelry is also subjective to personal taste, and the odds of your teen liking the same thing as you are slim at best. Additionally, if they already have lots of jewelry, they’re unlikely to wear the new piece often.

8. Video Games They Didn't Ask For
Unless your teen has been dropping hints about the newest Mario game, you should stay out of your local GameStop. A lot of people prefer to have digital copies of their games instead—and many teens can be picky about what they want to play and what will sit on their shelves collecting dust.

9. Watches
While a sensible gift for dad or grandpa—watches are notoriously boring. As an accessory, you rarely need more than one. Most teens don’t even use watches, preferring to check the time on their phones instead.

10. Phone Cases
Like most people, teens are often glued to their phones, so a shiny new phone case may seem like the ideal gift. But once again, this is heavily dependent on personal taste. The last thing you want to do is buy a random phone case that spends the next several years shoved in some drawer.
No one knows your teenager better than you, but now that we’ve covered the definitely-do-nots—here are some suggestions that may just put a smile on your teen's face.
1. Hydro-Stars Pimple Patches
These star-shaped pimple patches are all the rage—even celebrities are using them in interviews! Since most teenagers struggle with acne, this is a clever way to cover up blemishes while racking up style points.

2. Gift Cards
Teens adore gift cards! Not only are you trusting them to make their own choices, but you’re giving them the chance to get together with their friends and hit up the mall. Just be sure to choose the stores carefully—for example, try Garage, Bath & Body Works, Hot Topic, or Indigo.

3. Bath Bombs
It appears teens love everything that comes out of Bath & Body Works and Lush—which is why bath bombs or bubble bars make for exciting gifts. However, since they’re temporary, you may want to pair them with something more permanent.
4. Lego Kits
Legos are in—and since most sets are super complex and expensive—you can rest assured they’re not for little kids. With so many fandoms to choose from, be sure to pick the right one for your teen, whether that means a Star Wars spaceship or a Lord of the Rings monument.

8. Headphones
Whether they’re playing games on their computer or tuning out to music while they study—every teen needs headphones. Even if your teen already has a pair of headphones—upgrading them to a newer model is sure to earn you brownie points.
