Gender Reveals Done Right
It's a girl! Or a boy! We get it: whether you're a first-time parent or it's your fifth child, knowing the gender of your baby can be incredibly exciting—so much so that most parents even plan an entire reveal party around it. Given the celebration and anticipation built around it, the worst thing to do is to do it wrong, or worse, make the reveal extremely boring. Rather than repeating the same ideas you see over and over on social media (we're looking at you, funfetti cakes), why not think outside the box?
1. Cutting Into a Cake
Cut open the cake, and the color of the filling—pink or blue—will tell you the gender! Fun, right? While this used to be everyone's favorite reveal method, it’s now one of the most predictable setups around. As soon as someone carries out an oversized frosted cake, everyone already knows what’s about to happen.
2. Opening a Colored Gift Bag
Putting a pink or blue baby item inside a gift bag certainly gets the info across, but there won't be much build-up and no one is going to be excited once you pull the item from the bag. Unless the object has special significance, the whole thing will just feel like opening a regular present.
3. Holding Up a Baby Onesie
Best way to make your gender reveal boring? Easy—just hold up a tiny shirt that reads "It’s a Boy" or "It’s a Girl." As you can see, there’s very little surprise once the garment comes into view, especially if it’s already in an obvious color.

4. Uncovering a Sign
If you're wondering what's more boring than pulling out an item from a gift bag, it's this: signs that are hidden beneath a curtain. Once the covering comes off, woo-hoo, yay, the moment is over. If you’re gathering friends and relatives specifically for the reveal, it's probably better to do a more interactive activity.
5. Serving Pink or Blue Drinks
Colored punch and mocktails can certainly complement a party theme, but using the drinks themselves as the reveal won't create much anticipation, if at all. Worse yet, your guests may even spot the answer before you do if everything has already been poured.
6. Wearing the Answer Under a Jacket
Another idea some couples use is to arrive wearing neutral clothing, then expose the pink or blue shirts underneath. While easy to coordinate, the setup can feel...lacking, and certainly not worthy of a major reveal. There also isn’t much opportunity for guests to get involved.
7. Lighting Candles
Some special candles allow you to light them, and the flame will reveal what color (a.k.a. gender) comes up. Though interesting in essence, the people at your party are going to have to squint real hard in order to see what shade comes up.
8. Spraying Colored Silly String
Using silly string sounds playful, but the reveal itself will only last a few seconds, and guess what's next? Everyone's covered in sticky strands. It’s one of those ideas that creates much more cleanup than excitement.
9. Showing a Phone Screen
Displaying an ultrasound result or a message on a phone might be cool, but it's also uninventive. It's also an impossible request to ask everyone to gather around a small screen—most people won't even see what you're talking about right away.

10. Simply Making an Announcement
There’s absolutely nothing more boring than coming out and saying, "It's a ___." Sure, it's understandable if you don’t particularly care about having a formal gender reveal. But if you’ve already organized an entire gathering around the announcement, just saying it outright can feel slightly anticlimactic.
Of course, that's not to say that simple reveals are never enjoyable, but if you want something more memorable, you'll have to go all out.
1. Create a Family Trivia Finale
For a more exciting reveal, why not work it into the final question of a short family trivia game? After your guests work through the questions, the last answer revealing whether the baby is a boy or girl can feel much more special. Plus, it gives everyone a reason to participate!
2. Let the Future Sibling Make the Announcement
If the baby already has an older brother or sister, let them deliver the news. Bonus points if they've got their own special speech or message (that they've written themselves) to give. Younger kids may not follow the script perfectly, which can make the moment super cute.
3. Reveal It Through a Custom Puzzle
Here's another idea: have a simple jigsaw puzzle made with a message announcing the reveal, then let everyone assemble it together. This way, nobody sees the complete answer until the final few pieces fall into place, creating lots of nail-biting anticipation.
4. Use a Storybook Ending
Got a writer in the family? Creating a short story about welcoming the newest member (saving the big reveal for the final page) can be another creative way to do the reveal. Have someone read it aloud while everyone else listens. Later on, the book can then become a keepsake you can read to your child.
5. Plan a Restaurant Dessert Message
Rather than simply coloring the dessert itself, arrange for a restaurant or baker to write the reveal as a message across a large dessert platter. The server can then bring it out after dinner and uncover the written announcement at the table. That way, you can all have your cake and eat it, too.
6. Make It a Photo Booth Surprise
Another fun reveal idea is to set up a photo area where you, the parents, pose normally. The surprise: someone behind the camera is controlling the reveal, and at the right moment, a previously hidden sign behind them will uncover the baby’s gender. Your reactions will be forever immortalized.
7. Use a Scratch-Off Card
Custom scratch-off cards can also make the announcement more interactive. Everyone can count down together and uncover the answer simultaneously. Hearing dozens of reactions all at once will certainly make for a much more enthusiastic reveal than merely holding up a sign.
8. Arrange a Flower Reveal
If you like flowers, make the reveal floral-themed! Simply ask a florist to prepare an arrangement featuring flowers in the reveal color, which you can then remove the wrapping from together. Unlike disposable party decorations, the bouquet can stay on display throughout the celebration and later be pressed or preserved.
9. Build It Into a Board Game
For those who like board games over doing trivia, you can also incorporate the announcement into a homemade one that's designed around reaching the “baby” space at the end. Like scratch-off cards and other mini games, this turns the gathering into an actual shared experience.
10. Premiere a Short Family Video
If you have an editor wiz in the family, they can help put together a brief video featuring clips from the pregnancy announcement, reactions from relatives, or even messages from you, the parents, before revealing the answer in the final seconds. After the project is done, play it on a projector screen and watch as the realization kicks in for everyone.
