Everyone loves going to the theatres to watch the newest highly-rated films. But it goes without saying, there's proper movie theatre etiquette that everyone should be following to ensure a smooth, satisfying experience. We know that there are a couple of things people do that rub you the wrong way, and we're sure many others can agree. Here are 20 annoying things we all wish people would stop doing in the theatres.
1. Talking During the Movie
It's common knowledge that when you're sitting in the movie theatre, once the film starts playing, everyone's mouths should be shut. There shouldn't be any conversations or talking on the side; it's disruptive, distracting, and disrespectful to everyone else there just trying to enjoy the movie.
2. Using Mobile Phones
Surely you can go without being on your phone for two hours to enjoy a movie, right? Unfortunately for some people, this isn't the case. Seeing that bright light from a phone screen is so annoying in a movie theatre. When everything should be pitch black, that light just takes everyone out of the film. You should always avoid texting, scrolling, or browsing during this time.
3. Arriving Late
While we understand delays happen and sometimes things get in the way of us being on time, it is a bit frustrating when people show up late in the theatre. It's because it can be rather distracting or even block people's views of the screen. Even if it's just for a split second, it's enough for people to lose focus from the film.
4. Kicking Seats
No matter where you are, whether you're on a plane, on the bus, or sitting in the movie theatre, don't kick the back of people's seats. Just don't. It's rude, inconsiderate, and so so annoying for the person sitting there. Theatre seats definitely have enough space for your legs, so there's no reason why you should ever feel the need to do that.
5. Bringing Noisy Food
It's just common courtesy to avoid noisy or loud food in the movie theatre. Popcorn is a beloved movie snack not just because it tastes delicious, but because it's quiet to enjoy. Even if chips are your snack of preference, it's way too distracting in a theatre. Please always do your best to pick quieter options.
6. Talking on the Phone
For whatever reason, some people find the middle of a movie the perfect time to have a full on conversation on their phone. This goes hand in hand with talking in the theatre because it's essentially the same thing - why would you bother and distract other people who paid money to watch a movie? If you really have to make an urgent call, step outside.
7. Putting Feet on Seats
We get that movie theatre seats might not be as comfy as your recliner at home, but that doesn't give you any right to put your feet on top of the seat in front of you. Not only is it dirty, but it's pretty disrespectful if there are people sitting nearby. If you wouldn't want someone doing that to you, you shouldn't be doing it in the first place.
8. Flash Photography
People love taking photos on their phone, and while you shouldn't be on your phone in the first place, if you absolutely must, at least make sure your flash is off. Imagine watching a movie and then suddenly seeing a bright flash in the darkness out of nowhere. Talk about frustrating.
9. Bringing Young Children to Adult Films
We're not sure why some parents think it's a good idea to bring children or babies into adult films that can be scary or boring. It's simply not meant for them! When the kids get restless, or worse, the baby starts crying, it affects everyone in the theatre.
10. Commenting Loudly
While it's okay to laugh at funny scenes or gasp at shocking ones, it's not okay to make loud comments or share your opinions in the middle of the film. We know you probably want to discuss, but keep it to yourself until the very end.
11. Blocking the Aisles
When you're moving about in the theatre, the best way to do so is swiftly and quietly. Don't block people's paths by standing in the aisles or at the very ends. There's no reason why you should be standing about, so find your seat quickly so everyone else can do the same.
12. Bringing Large Bags
When people are trying to find their seats or are getting up to use the washroom, it can be annoying seeing bulky items like large bags in the way. Do your best to keep the seats and pathways clear so that people can move in and out smoothly.
13. Making Loud Noises
There's nothing wrong with having to cough or sneeze in the theatre - they're natural human responses after all! But you can make things better by doing your best to keep it quiet. Cover your nose and mouth to limit how loud the sounds are. And if it's not going away, consider stepping out for a moment.
14. Excessive PDA
It doesn't matter where you are, when you're in a public space, seeing overly excessive displays of affection can make everyone around you uncomfortable. There's no need to have a full on make out session in the middle of the theatre when people are just trying to enjoy the movie!
15. Reclining Too Much
While there's nothing wrong with making yourself comfortable in your seat, it's still important that you're mindful of everyone else. If you're sitting in a relatively busy theatre with people behind you, don't recline so far back that you're invading their personal space and ruining their comfort. Always be respectful of others.
16. Fidgeting Constantly
When you're sitting in seats so close to other people, try not to move around too much in a way that's distracting. Tapping your feet or fingers and moving your legs around can be distracting even if you're not making much sound.
17. Leaving Trash Behind
It's not just up to the janitors to ensure that the theatre is clean for everyone. Do your part and throw your garbage where it belongs - the trash can. Leaving behind messes is unfair to the workers and it just creates a messy environment no one wants to be in, including yourself.
18. Ignoring Assigned Seating
Most theatres nowadays all have assigned seating that you book at purchase. You should respect the system and sit where you are assigned to not create any complications. No one wants to deal with a scene in the theatre. What are you going to do when the person actually sitting in that seat arrives?
19. Wearing Strong Perfume
Given that movie theatres are enclosed spaces where you're sitting next to other people, don't overdo the perfume. Wearing very strong scents can be irritating for people who are sensitive with smell, and can just generally be a bit overwhelming for everyone sitting there.
20. Hogging Armrests
Once again, be mindful of the people sitting around you. While yes, sharing the armrests in a tight space can be a bit tricky to navigate, don't just assume it all belongs to you. Try to share the armrests in a way that's fair, so that the people around you can be comfortable too.
