The Performance Gives It Away
Bad flirting isn’t always loud. It isn’t even crude or painfully obvious at times. Flirting comes in a lot of different forms, and some of the worst tactics are rehearsed attempts to manufacture chemistry or curiosity without showing any sincere interest. Women have seen these routines so often that they can recognize when a so-called connection has been tried dozens of times before—and we’re here to reveal the secrets we’re well aware of.
1. Pretending He Mistook Her for Someone Else
He opens by asking whether she attended a particular college or met him at a party that never happened. Once she says no, he smoothly turns the “mistake” into an excuse to continue talking. You’re not the first person to try that, and women spot that the confusion was staged.
2. Deliberately Getting Her Name Wrong
Some men repeatedly call a woman by an incorrect name, hoping she’ll become playfully annoyed. It’s not as cute as guys think it is, especially if it gets irksome! Rather than creating some kind of playful tension, it makes the conversation feel like a test.
3. Inventing Competition
He casually mentions that another woman keeps messaging him or that an ex wants him back, all the while hoping that his current crush will jump at the chance to take him home. Women can tell when competition has been added to the conversation like a sales tactic, and most aren’t impressed.
4. Agreeing With Every Opinion She Shares
Whether she loves horror movies, hates brunch, or wants to move abroad, he suddenly feels the same way. He immediately turns himself into a yes-man, only for his enthusiasm to disappear when she asks a specific follow-up question about the subject. Instant compatibility stops being flattering when it’s clear that he’s simply collecting answers.
5. Using Her Friend as an Unpaid Spokesperson
Instead of approaching directly, he charms her friend and repeatedly asks whether she’s single and whether he has a chance. He may even encourage the friend to tell her how funny or interested he is. Yeah, women don’t like being the mouthpiece for men, and it also makes her friend feel terrible!
6. Manufacturing a Reason to Rescue Her
He creates a minor problem so he can immediately become the person who fixes it, such as hiding her pen and then “finding” one or giving bad directions before correcting them. The goal is simple: appear useful without waiting for a real opportunity to swoop in. The thing is, once the setup is visible, the favor no longer seems generous.
7. Revealing How Thoroughly He Researched Her
Knowing where she works is one thing if it’s listed on her profile. Mentioning her vacation from four years ago? That’s just creepy. Some men treat detailed research as proof that they’re attentive rather than evidence that they scrolled way too far.
8. Assigning Her a Personality
After a few minutes, he declares that she’s “the stubborn type,” emotionally guarded, or clearly accustomed to getting her way. Wildly enough, these labels are designed to make her defend herself and reveal more personal information. It’s a weird tactic that women can clock immediately, and it just shows how often he wants to control an exchange.
9. Creating Fake Deadlines
Everything is urgent with this guy. He announces that he’s leaving in five minutes. He says he’s deleting a dating app tomorrow. Maybe he’s just too busy to socialize after the weekend. The artificial deadline is supposed to pressure her into sharing her number, and it rarely works.
10. Complimenting Her Through Someone Else
Rather than telling her that her outfit looks great, he says her friend must already know she’s the best-dressed person in the room. This really doesn’t land as well as men hope, especially because it just puts another woman down in the process.
11. Turning Every Detail Into a Plan
She mentions liking Italian food, and he immediately describes the restaurant they’ll visit next month. A passing comment about music becomes a discussion about the concert they’ll attend. Women can spot premature plans, and if anything, it weirds them out rather than draws them in.
12. Performing Vulnerability
He introduces a very well-thought-out story about betrayal or being misunderstood…before earning that level of trust. The details may sound sincere, but they’re always delivered so smoothly that she suspects he’s used the same account before—and he probably has.
13. Asking Questions He Doesn’t Listen To
He asks about her job or favorite hobby because he knows questions are supposed to show interest. When it comes to the answers, though, he tunes out. Women notice when curiosity is performed rather than felt, and it’s a huge turn-off.
14. Borrowing Her Vocabulary
After she describes something as “chaotic” or “underrated,” he uses the same phrase. It’s another form of conforming, and while a little natural mirroring is common, copying every word starts to sound deliberate. The conversation then feels less like chemistry and more like someone shoehorning himself into her life.
15. Testing Whether She’ll Become Jealous
This one is so common that almost every woman has seen it! He flirts with another woman, watches for a reaction, and then returns with more attention to the original girl. Sometimes he’ll even ask whether she missed him. Either way, it’s obvious, and most women don’t fall for it.

16. Giving Her a Pet Name
Within minutes, she becomes “trouble,” “princess,” or some other nickname he could use on practically anyone. He presents the familiarity as confidence, despite knowing almost nothing about her, and women can peg it immediately.

17. Pretending Her Boundary Was a Joke
When she declines a drink or says she needs to leave, he laughs as though she’s teasing him. She really isn’t, and even if she was, not reading the room is a giant red flag on its own. Women recognize an attempt to cross boundaries, and if you do it right out of the gate, it tells them all they need to know.
18. Dropping Achievements
It’s not really impressive to casually mention an expensive neighborhood or friendship with a bigwig. It’s even worse if you pause, expecting her to ask for more details. The silence afterward should be enough reason not to continue.
19. Acting as Though He Already Won
Before she has shown much interest, he jokes about her being obsessed with him. He might even make jokes about her following him home, or telling her friends about their conversation. Well, most women see that the joke is an attempt to establish an attraction she doesn’t have.

20. Claiming He Never Flirts Like This
It’s so obvious when men insist that approaching women is completely outside their behavior. It’s meant to transform an ordinary introduction into a rare event she should appreciate, and unfortunately for men, it’s only memorable because so many women have heard the same thing.
